Aimee Castro, RN, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow, agreed to share the story of her friendship with her friend Ruth as a tribute to her.
When Volunteering Turns into a Friendship
New to the Montreal area, Aimee decided to volunteer her time with the organization The Yellow Door. This organization “runs intergenerational services and programs that aim to bring young and older adults together to the promotion of mental and physical health and the prevention of social isolation across generations.” Aimee was paired with an older adult to help her learn how to use a computer.
Through their meetings, conversations, and discussions, this volunteer relationship blossomed into a lasting and cherished friendship—one that lasted 15 years, until Ruth’s passing.
According to Aimee, Ruth was an impressive and inspiring woman. She helped Aimee, who had just arrived in Montreal, get to know the city.
“I was lucky,” explains Aimee. “She taught me not only the importance of caring for others, but also of taking care of myself. She had the most beautiful smile; she was curious and passionate about every aspect of her life.”
What was supposed to be a few days of volunteering turned into a story of unwavering intergenerational friendship, filled with formative and unforgettable lessons.
And you, which older person has inspired your journey?
